How do you do it? I downloaded a set from gnome-look and dont know if there's a special place to put them or something? any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated.

IT's easier than you might think at first blush. Go to System>Preferences>Themes. When that window opens, just drag the icon package over the themes window... and drop it. You should get a little dialog box that says "such and such has installed correctly".
Post back if something goes wrong.

ok, did that and a window pops up saying the file format is invalid. The file ext. of the icons themselves are .svg Is this a problem?

You shouldn't unpack the icons. Leave them compressed in the archive you downloaded. Just drag the whole archive and drop it in.

Dan's suggestion was for icons in a tarball. Is this a single icon or a couple? Open your Home folder on your desktop and from the View menu on the menu bar check 'Show hidden files' Look for a folder called .icons. You can drop them in to that folder or create a subfolder within it. If you want to assign a particular icon to a program you can navigate to that hidden folder when you right click on the object and select 'Properties'

I have custom icons for Firefox and a couple of other proggies that aren't part of a theme that I got from gnome-look.org that I just threw in my hidden ~/.icons folder. I know I could put them in /usr/share/pixmaps or /usr/share/icons but they'll only get nuked next time I upgrade.
