Having spent days downloading FC6 i386 DVD iso, and having successfully burnt the iso and verified it, I tried to install on MS Virtual PC 2004.

The dvd boots perfect, and I proceed with the language and keyboard selection until presented with:

INSTALLATION METHOD: What type of media contains the installation method?

I chose CD ROM since thats the closest thing to resemble my DVD drive, but to my surprise the installation kept asking that the "CD Not Found" and "Please insert installation CD".

I tried the text version and the graphical interface with no luck.

I am so disappointed in FC6 having spent days downloading the DVD iso. I had no such problems with FC5.

Any help? Before I go and make the switch to Ubuntu for the first time?

Virtual PC 2004 is bit outdated now. I would recommend you trying VMware Server ( http://www.vmware.com/products/server/ ). Its free just like Virtual PC.

Hi, I am using Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 Beta and it gives this exact same error message. (I am hosting on and guesting with Vista so please just leave me be on the choice.)

You can get around it by capturing an ISO file in place of the actual CD. Download the first ISO or two for CD installs and then select this as the source.

This is now the fourth or fifth annoyance I have with this particular version of Fedora...

Hi dscherf,

Thanks for your input. This was the next thing I was preparing to do before finally hanging the helmet and leave Fedora. I tried capturing the DVD ISO but no luck there.

Can you confirm that by downloading the first 2 ISO and using these as the source in VPC worked for you?

Yes, I meant to say use the CD-ROM ISOs. I haven't tried to use the DVD ISO. (I don't know why the ISO would work any better than the physical DVD...).

My install is currently on Disc 3. I'll know in a few minutes whether or not this release will even work on VPC. =D

Excellent, I hope it works for you :)

Btw, what's the reason that made you go for VPC 2007 if you dont mind me asking? Any cool features or performance advantages?

Heh, kinda long story short:

I work for a major computer book publisher and I produce the CD/DVD media we do here. One of my tasks is to install all the software that goes on the media. I'm doing a list of all the packages that are in Fedora Core 6, which led me to the following issues:

1) Yum, in its default configuration, will not work without an active network connection. Since I sandbox my installs (i.e. install on a computer with no network access), I couldn't launch the Add/Remove Software program because it wanted a remote repository instead of local. Instead of changing my repository, I simply hooked the computer up to the network. (Strike one on usability.)

2) Once I hooked the machine up to the internet, I was finally able to install Xen. Hearing about how much better Fedora Core 6 managed Xen, I decided to give it a whirl. However, one of the reasons why I would want to run Xen on FC6 is to run Windows (since it's one of three platforms that I produce media for). Since I don't want to go through the whole process of creating a NFS export, FTP server process, or HTTP process, Xen isn't a usable alternative for people who are not allowed to run server services within a corporate network. In other words, the lack of being able to install direct from a filesystem, removable or otherwise, is a rather big barrier of entry.

3) Since Xen was out, I downloaded VMWare Server for Linux. Because of the header file issue, already reported elsewhere, VMWare simply won't install on FC6 without me having to go around and fix it. Thus, VMWare on FC6 is not a viable option unless I want to fix FC6. I don't have this amount of time on my hands (and the web-based information where I learned how to supposedly fix it does not work when I try it).

4) Since I am a beta tester for Vista (practically anyone could be with RC1), I installed that on my machine. Since I found out that Virtual PC 2007 was in beta I simply applied to be a tester. It appears anyone can be, since they let me. =D

5) I am downloading VMWare to install as well, but I don't know how well it will work on Vista. VPC 2007 was touted as being able to both host and guest Vista, and since I need at least one testing station with Vista, that seemed like the easiest choice.

A longer answer than you wanted, but a lot of this would be unnecessary if FC6 worked out of the box, so to speak...

It seems others are finding the same problem with Fedora:

Very frustrating indeed. Now i have to spend days downloading the 5 CD iso versions! I might apply for the Vista beta too dscherf, maybe it will be more stable than Fedora at this stage? ;)

Hi,

Vista has its own problems so far. It's a nice OS, certainly better than any preceding Microsoft OS out there in my opinion, but it's not my OS of choice, which would be OS X (and, before the flames start, it has its own problems, too). Each OS has its place and use, strengths and weaknesses. No OS is perfect for everyone, nor should one be.

With a little bit more polish, I think FC6 would be a great release. Right now, there are just too many post-installation issues for me to put it in the "it just works" category.

Fedora Core 6 did install correctly when I used the Capture Disc function on the Fedora Core 6 CD-ROM ISOs. Because it didn't know anything about the graphics adapter (which is why I did a text-based install in the first place) I am at a text login. Which is fine. One day I'll figure out how to get X configured in VPC but I don't have time for it now.

I did download and install VMWare Server, as suggested by someone else. Okay, two thoughts: VMWare Server on Windows requires IIS for some management functions. Kind of disturbing... Secondly, Fedora Core 6's installation manager (in all its graphically goodness) does not recognize the VMWare drive and thus cannot partition nor use anything within VMWare.

Thanks for the update, it gives me hope :)

Im half way downloading the Fedora Core 6 CD-ROM ISOs.

In VMWare, when you set up for a new Virtual Machine, if you select Other Linux 2.6 Kernel, it will correctly allow a Fedora Core 6 install. If you choose Red Hat Linux, the created disc is not discoverable with the installation routine of FC6.

So, I now have a full FC6 install running on VMWare Server...

This link may also be of interest:

section 1.3.3 "Setup fails when installing from a mounted drive in a Virtual PC environment"

Even if it's about VS2005, the problem it explains is about Virtual PC 2004 and large ISOs.

Thanks for finding that! Since I am using VPC 2007 Beta, I decided to test this further.

To test, I just installed Vista as a guest OS. The install went perfectly. The Vista DVD is about 3 GB or so in size.

I've updated VPC to 2007 beta and now I can take advantage of loading large ISOs directly into VPC. I can confirm that the DVD ISO is now readable and I am on my way installing Fedora 6 :)

I just like to say, since my first post here, I have gone on a craze of installing UBUNTU, PCBSD and CENTOS all on VPC. Of them all, Ubuntu was very straight forward to tweak and get the whole installation working. It's also the fastest Open Source OS under VPC (so far). PCBSD somehow manages to bypass VPC's 16bit restriction and loads up nicely too but it runs VERY slow. Unfortunately, I never managed to get Centos booting up into the graphical window. I managed to install perfectly, I can get it to boot into single user mode but no graphical windows at all.

I'll keep you updated on my Fedora status for now...

How did it take you days to download? The torrent for it shoved FC6 386 to me in 3 hours. I downloaded and and now seeding the x64 torrent just for something to do. My first day with Core 6 got me nowhere then people on this board fixed most of my problems just by reading the posts then i finally figured out I HAD to set security to relaxed and now VLC is working. I was just going to see how far I could get with CORE 6 and then go back to windows and wait it out but no more. Next weekend my big hard drive is getting wiped and Core 6 is going ON IT! It just took me a bit to get over hump of how things work with this thing but I AINT GOING BACK. The only thing that I'm not completely excstatic over is GAIM not having webcam and voice chat support but thats just matter of time. I love how it does everything else.

hephasteus, you may want to try kopete for your messenger. it has lots of functionalities you need. it's btw included in the KDE but you can install it alone from the repo. :)

I downloaded the DVD ISO as soon as it came out - so given my connection, the fact that not many people were seeding at the time, and my torrent client, it took days to get Fedora 6.

Anyway, just to update... i've installed via text mode, selected the generic desktop distro, all the default settings, a few hours later installation is finished. Boot into text mode and from command prompt set the depth to 16 and change the monitor to generic S3 seems to work for me at this stage so I kept it.

Everything is working smooth at this point. Restart and startx but then i was overloaded with
1) firefox has every single language preinstalled and was VERY slow. This is instane, you should let users choose which languages to install and only keep english preinstalled.

2) Why on earth would you preinclude BEAGLE search index with firefox?

3) Having logged in Fedora was trying to update itself.. this later crashed and i had to close it and do it manually via the Package Manager.

Other than that... i havent encountered anything that was out of the ordinary. In terms of speed on VPC, this is the 2nd fastest distro after Ubuntu. Maybe because its so overloaded with modules.

But so far, im impressed :)

I have installed F6 via vpc in text mode as it just won't work for me in graphic. Problem is I can't get it to boot into the GUI. I am new at this and if someone can help me with the this problem. does it have to do with the monitor settings and how do I go about changing them. I just want the OS to boot into a GUI not the command prompt! Can't use VMware as it is for inteel macs I believe, so vpc it is. Hopefully I can get this sorted out as I would really love to try this OS out!

Apart from any Fedora-specific issues (I think the GUI needs at least 256k RAM), check http://vpc.visualwin.com/ for the VPC-specific ones. Note: you may need to peek at the notes for older versions of Fedora too (like using 16-bit colour).

I'm up and running in graphic mode using VPC 2007. I set the memory to 512 bytes and installed using kernsl option: linux text. Then I edited the /etc/X11/xorg.conf to change the default pixel depth to 16 (from 24) as specified in the following post.

After starting and logging into root - start the gnome desktop with startx

Use a virtual drive (e.g. Virtual Clone Drive), then in VPC 2007 select Virtual drive {drive letter} e.g. G: . However, you still have the graphics issue during the GIU install (as mentioned in the posts here).
