Why is Vegastrike lagging so much?

I just install vegastrike today, just incase I ever feel like playing games (which is not very often, but when the time is right, I will). At first, I did not configure it properly so it was not responding to the mouse at all. I don't know how, but I got back to that original gray setup screen and set the mouse up to work. Well, now there damn near a 20 second lag for everything!

I have...
512MB of 400mhz ram
2.8ghz p4 CPU
40GB maxtor Hard drive
ATI Radeon 9200 w/ 128mb


The game was running really well, zero lag, looked nice, but was in keyboard mode. I've played other demanding games in the past on this machine, so I know the video card is suitable.

Does anybody know why this is occuring?

its not something silly like having X set to a different colour depth of this game your trying to play?

also make sure you have hardwarre acceleration if you have further problems try Vega Strike Forums (http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/forums/) we try to help :)
