FC5 to FC6 Upgrade

Hello all,

I didn't know that FC6 came out already... How long has it been out?

Other thing since I have FC5 running on my Dell XPS laptop would it be a good idea to just do an upgrade or should I do a fresh install of FC6....

Can somenoe give me some advise on this ...

There are three possibilities: use yum (first install fedora-release.rpm package then yum upate: Not advised
Second: use upgrade possibility on CD. Takes very long but eventually works (for me 6 tilmes longer than normal)
third: do complete reinstall. I advise this, since your personal settings are stored in your home folder anyway. Ok you have to reinstall your programs, but I am sure there is sme things you did wrong in the past and would like to try differently. Now is the chance.
The upgrade worked for me but it did not feel right if you know what I mean.

So you're saying I should just do a full reinstall of FC6. I did have a couple thing but that means if I do a fresh install i will loose all my stuff unless I back it up correct?

I guess I could try it but first I will download the iso... while that downloads I will back up my stuff to a thumb drive...

FC6 was released on 24 Oct 2006.
as to advice on whether to upgrade or do a fresh install, it would depend on how you had partitioned your hard disk and what applications you already had installed and how much time you were prepared to invest to resolve any issues arising from an upgrade.

Well that's so true .... If I have the time. well I just updated my kernel last night and I'm having trouble using it...

I think I might wait othe week or something.... Going on vacation soon maybe when i come back I will upgrade my machine... That way some of the bugs are fixed...

There are no downloads for desktop computers, only system architectures and FC versions. It would depend on the system architecture of the laptop.

Of course, I'm still a complete n00b at this. :P

FC works on laptops too, but often there are problems due to the implementation of acpi on the laptop amongst other things.

Well true about the laptop but they could fix with little changes... I had FC5 and love it... I'm install FC6 now on my laptop....

Can't wait to see what it looks like..
