VIA 8235 not recording

I was having issues with ALSA initializing my VIA 8235 onboard audio, so I compiled a new kernel and added full support for the VIA 8235 instead of just bringing it up as a module. Now, my VIA 8235 initializes every time I boot up the computer, but I can't get it to record any sound. I know this because MythTV no longer records any sound. Additionally, I can't find dsp in /dev.

Has anyone else had problems with VIA audio cards?

When I boot my computer using the standard 2.6.18-1.2200.fc5, the VIA8235 doesn't initialize every time. I checked dmesg when it fails and it says that snd-via82xx ....<random numbers and symbols>.... failed -12 or something like that.

What could prevent the kernel from initializing the module only part of the time?
