Any ideas as to why I'm getting this error:

FC6, new install, applied 13 new updates. I can get a 2.6.18.1 kernel to work, but it won't boot because of a VFS panic ( can't find root partition ), which has been the source of much frustration. I'm trying to get this kernel compiled so I can get the ipw3945 software to work.
Any help would be much appriciated.
