Radeon 9600 Pro - driver installed, games work, desktop does not

I used the process listed in the Fedora newsletter for installing the ATI driver into FC6. Open GL games (tux racer for instance) run great, but my desktop is not working right. I only get about 180 FPS in glxgears and Desktop Effects no longer work and refuse to be enabled. Before I installed this driver I was getting 2000 fps in glxgears and desktop effects worked fine. I'm running the desktop at 1280x1024x24. Anyone else have this problem, and is there a fix?

You can only use AIGLX (the desktop effects used "out of the box") with the open source "radeon" drivers. The proprietary ATI drivers will not work. If you want to use the desktop effects with the fglrx drivers from ATI you'll need to install and use XGL until such time as ATI releases drivers with will work with AIGLX.
