Hi Everyone, this is my problem:

Cofiguration of my Pc:
P4 2.66 Mhz EMT64 CPU
512 Mb Ram DDR 400
MB FOXCONN 915GL7MH-S, with a Intel 900 graphics onboard
HD 80 GB WD Ata 100; with Windows XP Pro SP2.
Graphics Card Powercolor Ati Radeon X700 series with 256 mb of ram, dual head and
tv out.

I have installed windows xp and the system works fine; the i got a DVD of fedora core 4, and i decided to install because i've heard of linux before and i want to try; the problem is that fedora core don't recognize my ati card; the installation with the option linux -noprobe option work without problem, the dual boot with windowsxp works fine and for that part the system it's running normally; so when i choose start with fedora the system hangs and show this message ETC/RC.D/RC.SYSINIT LINE 165 : 954 Segment Violation MODPROBE $ 1/DEV/NULL; and heres it's the tricky part; when i disconnet the monitor to the ati card and plug to the onboard card the installation works fine and the setup recognize everything in the system include the Intel onboard graphics, with the first reboot linux start without problem and show the log screen.
I've installed the ati drivers, run aticonfig, edit the xorg.conf to setup the ati card and try to match the specification of the board; then reboot, disconnet form the onboard and connect to the ati card, and the same message popup again.
Sorry for the long of the post but this problem it's driving me crazy; and sorry for my english(it's not my native language)

Oohh don't worry... the ATI drivers are not the best drivers. The reason is not the Fedora but the ATI. All nVIDIA cards works pretty fine but the ATI cards have some problems..... many problems i think.

I read the post thank's for the response, but i got to say that i detected whats it's the real problem, it's not the ati card; fedora (and linux because i try with suse 10) have problem with the shared resources assigned by the bios; i disabled de onboard lan card, the onboard sound card and the usb support and(magic) fedora started with my ati card with the vesa drivers installed(the vesa drivers it's because fedora 4 don't have support for the ati x700 cards, suse 10 detected my ati card but with the first reboot the system hangs); and the system run fine(only that i don't have sound, red, and usb support).

But it is something strange because i have installed Fedora on such a computer but it works fine. The computer is with lan and sound cards onboard and fedora works pretty fine.
The second my machine that has fedora installed is P4 HT with sound, lan and video cards onboard and ... yes, no problems.

So, i suppose that you have problems with your mobo. Ahaa.. Foxconn motherboard.. ok.
Can you boot a live cd? For example run mepis and see about this problems.
Probably you will be able to install mepis on your hard drive. So, do it. Just try to see if you have the same problem, but i am sure you have some hardware problem.

Thanks for the results. It will be useful to share the solution with us.

Yeah i know it's strange, i have windows xp sp2 and windows don't have any problem with the configuration of the bios; i detected a shared resources with my ati card and the multimedia sound board sharing the irq 11(it's what i read when i turn on the pc) somehow fedora have conflict with that and get lost during the initialization of the operating system; like i said before when i plug the monitor to the onboard pc and then use the onboard vga card everithyng goes normal, until today i try everithyng(rebuild the kernel, edit xorg.conf, try every single way to boot linux and nothing)

Aha. Do you disable the onboard card when you use the Ati card?
I hade such issue before some time....

No, i think that's the problem, i can disable the onboard vga card, the bios of my motherbard don't have that option, the bios have the option of choice the init display first device(pci, onboard, pciex), i choose pciex because the ati card use that slot, but i don't know why fedora can't detect that the pciex card it's the first device, again i have in windows xp installed the ati card(dual head, actually i have one monitor) and the onboard vga installed, so in windows i have this configuration:
Radeon X700 Series - Samsung Syncmaster 793S monitor
Radeon X700 Series Secondary - Monitor Plug an play (no monitor connected)
Intel 915 graphics card(i can't recall the name right now) - Monitor Plug and Play (no monitor connected).
But Fedora can't (i think) work with this setup; the next thing i will try well i don't know i'm running off with my ideas!!!!!!

I had a issue like this on Gentoo Linux. The onboard intel card and Ati and the same result.
So, i suppose it is probably the general linux problem or maybe intel video card problem.
As i said before i had video card onboard and additional video card but Fedora works fine.
On my P4 machine with intel card and ati card i had this problem too.
I think it is a problem on machines that run configurations with intel and ati cards.

You say that can't disable the onboard card.... hmm bad. I will try to find some information about this case.
