View Full Version : no welcome screen on first-boot

I got no welcome screen on my first attempt to boot into a fresh FC5 installation.

When grub came up for the first time on reboot after installing system and packages from DVD, there was one FC5-related boot choice on the (graphical) grub screen. From there on, the boot process (all shown in plain text, no tux penguin in sight at the top of screen) took me to a plain-text console login prompt. I logged-in ok as root (and added a system user). While I was logged in, I also used ping to find that the network was up and running ok. But what next for the rest of my system setup as per the install docs?

Pointers to info would be appreciated -- for a newbie to Fedora (with a little but not much experience of other linux distros).

Installation guide tells me to expect a welcome screen (but it doesn't say where to go looking for it, if it doesn't appear!). Maybe it's an X-configuration problem? Where do I find info about the FC5 style of config files layout to fix this if that's what is wrong?

[Details of my install:- h/w x86/Sempron/nforce2 chipset/ nVidia-GeForce4 video. FC5 installed off recent 'Linux Format' DVD. Root (/) and everything hanging from it is on /dev/hda3 (5GB) (I didn't use separate partition for /boot). Swap is on /dev/hda5. Grub is installed to /dev/hda3 as secondary bootloader. DVD install process seemed to go smoothly, told me packages installed ok, things finished ok, now reboot. On reboot, I fixed handover from primary bootloader ok, and got to FC5's grub boot screen, again seemingly ok. FC5 grub options included the 'hiddenmenu' grub boot feature described in FC5 install guide, again seemingly ok -- except no option anywhere to get me to a firstboot welcome screen and the setup agent. So what could have happened? Maybe I'm nearly there with only a tiny link somewhere missing, but I don't know where to look to get back on to the setup pathway.]

Thanks in advance for any pointers.
Terry

Hi,

I have the same problem here - FC5 wouldn't install in graphical mode with my ATI card so I had to do a text-install. It now brings me to a terminal on startup. 'startx' works fine, but how do I add it automatically/turn on the login screen?

Cheers.
