UT2K4 weirdness

Ok, so i have FC5 and UT2K4 installed, and running fine, except when i change the in-game gamma / brightness settings, they don't do anything, as i have an ATI card its fairly dark and unplayable .. the settings are being written to the ini file but they seem to be ignored, does anyone have an idea on what the issue could be? the gamma setting in X via the fglrx control panel changes fine, but just not in game :/

To change the gamma and brightness settings in UT2K4, the renderer depends on some extensions, maybe the fglrx driver does not have this? It's been a while since I last used the fglrx driver, I must confess... However I don't remember having such an issue, though I did have the global gamma a bit higher through the fglrx control panel.
