I managed to install Quake 4 without any problems. However, when I ran the game, I was asked for my cd-key. I noticed that there was no space for the dashes, so I just entered the key but got rejected. The thing is that the key worked when I installed Quake 4 on Windows. Why doesn't it work for GNU/Linux?

Not sure off the top of my head but I have Quake IV at home. I'll pop it on tonight and see if I run into the same problem

I've found the cause of the problem. Apparently it's because the game checks the cdkey with the server to determine if its valid. Maybe my key isn't considered valid since although it's an original copy, I borrowed it from the library.

But you say the key works in Windows... Maybe, just maybe, you can type the dashes and the text will simply scroll to the left as you use more space? I don't own a copy of Quake IV yet, so I'm not sure...

it's got to do with editing a file which I can't remember offhand but will find when i get home. Ahh it's actually /etc/hosts. I'll post the releveant entries when I get home.
