nVidia finally released their long-promised legacy driver for linux on 26 June 2006

I've been waiting a long time for this. One of my old PCs running FC5 has an old old Riva TNT2 M64 graphics card.

With some excellent help from the Nvidia linux forum, I got it working. Here are the specific FC5 instructions:

I have not seen a Livna package for this, so I had to install the old-fashioned way by building the kernel module and manually editing my xorg.conf.

But it works and I'm happy. I say a big thanks to Nvidia for their excellent linux support.

FYI, here is the list of old nvidia cards that are supported by the legacy driver:

What's the point of a legacy driver? I have two Nvidia 6800 GS cards installed in my system and running SLI. I've never configured any drivers for Linux, but I'm kind of tempted to. If anyone could direct me to a good tutorial for this that would be greatly appriciated. In fact, is there any way to check if my system is using the most up-to-date, performance enhancing drivers?

Hello:
What's the point of a legacy driver? It's simply to get his video card running as due to the age of his card it is no longer supported by the newer driver releases.

If you follow this guide you will have to the most current drivers for your kernel :http://stanton-finley.net/fedora_core_5_installation_notes.html#nVidia

Is it really worth it to install these updated drivers? In windows, when I install the nvidia drivers, it slows down the fan speed once windows loads, and I think this is a really nice feature. Of course, it also enables SLI support for me. Would installing the latest nvidia drivers in Linux enable those two features for me as well? If I wouldn't notice a significant performance increase, or any new features, I don't think it'd really be worth it to upgrade my VC drivers. Also, is it necessary to download any updated chipset drivers, or sound card drivers? Once again, I'm just curious because I really have no idea about how Linux and drivers work. Thanks again for all the help!
