I have recently done a clean install of FC5. I have an ATI X800PRO and have read about the recent problems. After the clean install (with minimal packages) I follow the steps from http://stanton-finley.net/fedora_core_5_installation_notes.html to get the ATI drivers working.
I only used the livna repos to install the updated kernel and fglrx modules.
Afterwards I am able to run GNOME in resolutions higher than 848x480(?) but the graphics card quickly heats up and starts lagging. Even when the computer is idle and the CPU is at 1% the computer fans kick into high gear within minutes as if I had been running full 3D-accelleration for a while.
Also, when I try to swith to a new console (ie <CTRL><ALT><F1>) it hangs for a sec and brings me to a graphical logon. When I try to return to console 6 I recieve the message like "The greeter is failing..."
As a test I tried booting my old HD with FC4 when I had a Nvidia 5200 and it was able to install ATI without problems and run without heating up (much) or lagging (After automatically creating a new Xorg config when Xorg failed to start).
Is this a problem others are having or am I just overlooking something obvious?
Thanks in advance,
James
