just manually find and download the kernel rpm from an update repo and then install it as root using rpm -ivh <kernel>.rpm
If you are using FC4 look here for the kernels:
http://gulus.usherbrooke.ca/pub/distro/fedora/linux/core/updates/4/i386/
For FC5 look here for the kernels:
http://gulus.usherbrooke.ca/pub/distro/fedora/linux/core/updates/5/i386/
Just find the kernel you want, right click to download and save on your machine and install with the rpm -ivh command. Download the kernel-devel to match your new kernel if need be and install that also. Then reboot and you should have the option from grub to select the new kernel

Sorry, not sure how to check out which type of motherboard you have. Were you able to download the rpms and install them?
