I was wondering if you guys are into Lord of the Rings Online because right now you can vote if they should make a native linux version right here:

Oh, I heard that the movies themselves used GNU/Linux boxes to provide the computerised special effects.

I checked the thread out, but it looks like a few good linux supporters are getting bashed pretty hard. Someone should put together a good list of linux games including ones that also run on windows and try to help these people out. I was going to reply to the thread, but I used a fake email address as to cut down on the spam and now I can't reply to the thread(I can't confirm my registration).

Hm... some of these guys have a point though. The resources and efforts needed to port a windows game to linux could cost a lot and not be very profitable.

Of coure, the alternative would be to help Wine or Cedega to support their game.

They do have a point that it may be costly. Although I find it irritating that more games aren't intially created for linux as well as Windows. I'm not sure either if I completely agree with the statistical information posted about percentages of windows and linux users. Maybe it is correct, but to me it seems a little low. Also I wonder if the percentage increases or decreases if they checked just gamers. I mean there's no way I would ever play a Lord of the Rings game, but if Linux users don't start making a stink when game makers just produce their games for Windows it will never change.

While I appreciate the efforts of Wine/Cedega personally I would much rather that a native version of the game be created for linux. I mean, lets face it, if a company used SDL for it's game libary & OpenGL for graphics then that game would be crossplatform for Windoze, Linux and Mac. The problem is most companies use M$ DirectX to write their games and it costs a heck of a lot for Linux developers to port it.

Anyway thats my 5 cents worth. Sorry if I ranted, but this is something I feel strongly about.

If game companies stopped using directx or anything proprietary to Microsoft who are known not to be cross platform friendly, then it wouldn't be such a chore to make games cross-platform. If id software can do it with there games, then any company who makes the effort can do the same. Those who say otherwise are just making an excuse not to provide it.

Well, Epic did the effort. Their games are DirectX, but they also provide a (buggy) OpenGL renderer, however their main API is DirectX, and the game's built around that. I think there is much more going on in the gaming industry for not supporting Linux than we are able to see, pretty much it has all to do with money, and as such with safe bets, but I'm sure there's more to it than only that (or maybe not?)

In case anyone Googles for this in the future as I did.

Here's a solution: on an LOTRO forum thread here (http://forums.lotro.com/showthread.php?t=85079)

Enjoy. :)
