View Full Version : Kernel upgrade & Nvidia drivers

Hi guys!

I know this one is "too basic" but I'll have to ask it :)

In Fedora, there's often they offer an updated version of the kernel (via Up2date). Here's my question:

If I got kernel 2.6.4-1. Then I install Nvidia drivers... and hopefully, everything's fine.

A week later there's an update for my kernel (let's say 2.6.4-2).
If I choose to include these (kernel packages) in my update then if I reboot and choose to boot with this new kernel (2.6.4-2) there's no Nvidia ...

What's the easiest way of dealing with this issue? (please don't mention "Get rid of the Nvidia card" ... :) Should I re-install the Nvidia drivers for every new kernel update??? ... or is it possible to load a module???

(I'm cosmic ... )

Basically, the installation of the NVidia driver IS the compilation of the module, each time you upgrade your kernel, each time you have to install it. tada ......

I've tried to reinstall the drivers but I get a

Failed dependencies:
python2 = (2.2 is needed by nvidia-graphics4363...)

I've tried install python but that doesn't seem to fix it, any suggestions?

Try getting a later version of the drivers. You have probably installed python 2.3 and the driver install is looking for 2.2 the later drivers (56.xx ?) should recognise python 2.3.

Also svarreby are you using the stock FC kernel as I think the current 2.6.x kernels don't work with the nvidia drivers due to a conflict with a recently added patchset (4K_STACKS or omething)

I tried installing the the newest drivers but they still seem to need python2 (= 2.2 ......)

I didn't force the install used --nodeps X now works, but this method is not ideal.

Varkk, you can upgrade the kernel all you want. There is an option not to use 4K_STACKS when you compile the kernel. Also, CONFIG_REGPARM can also 'cause a problem with the nvidia driver. Though, mind you, I'm using the nvidia driver with 4k-stacks and config_regparm enabled, however I'm a fluke... ;)

ontguy: you probably installed python 2.3 and it needs 2.2. However, if it works it works.. :) If you're not happy with it, try using Google to find an RPM for python 2.2 fedora. ontguy, I'm assuming you're from Ontario?

I am from Ontario, close to Toronto. You?

I submitted this to the atrmps.net mailing list. I received a quick reply, the drivers should be updated sometime today.

Quoting Reply.
Thanks for reporting, upcoming drivers (1-2h) have this dependencies
fixed.
