Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone could help me out with my newbie question.

Is there a software for FC 5 or any linux that I could run a security vulnerability test that will show me what security holes a linux or windows have. Then do a test on the hole to see what happens with the machine. Like a NT, 2000 machine see if I could bring up the blue screen of death... A Gui would be nice.

I'm getting in to security so this would help me at home with my 2 computer I have already setup running windows.

just get into root and run nmap-fe (or command line nmap if you prefer) and scan yer open ports and whatnot... as far as i'm concerned, if the door/port is closed, you're not coming in. that'll show you which doors are open and so on.

i do seem to recall a particular program i tried out that did exactly what you said though. in the end i dropped it because all it did was give me a more in-depth version of "lock down port 22"

You're looking for nessus.

It does port scanning as well as vulnerability checking.

That should get you started.

Shields up.

That should be of some help, plus the podcast in reference is great -- worth going back and listening to them all.
