Hi all,
I am curious if it is possible to install Fedora 5 using only the first 4 of 5 cd's. I am having some issues with the fifth cd, but i would like to continue installing fedora without having to download the fifth cd right away. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello:
Yes you can...just install the default (or less) stuff and you should be okay. You can use yum to install the rest after you are up an running.

Yes, I've noticed a couple of posts about it being installed with only 3 of the CD's. I always customize my selections and you can certainly minimize the list a lot that way, keeping in mind that you'll add software later through yum. I wish there was a list showing what was on each CD though, since one wrong choice can bork the whole install. Perhaps someone can chip in some info on how many CD's the 'standard' install uses?
WOW, that was quick! Thanks, Seve - question answered!

Thanks so much guys. I have been using Fedora 2 for a little while and i have decided to work myself away from windows altogether. Thanks again for the quick reply.

The default selection requires the first two CD's. minimal is one.

A bit off-topic, but will there be an ftp-install option someday? So I only need to download the first iso or perhaps a mini-boot iso?

Its *already* there and has been there for Red Hat Linux and every single version of Fedora. Kindly read the installation guide.
As an example, for FC5 you can dowload the rescue cd image from ftp://redhat.taygeta.com/pub/RedHat/fedora/core/5/i386//iso
Or the boot.iso image from http://ftp.riken.jp/Linux/fedora/core/5/x86_64//os/images/ and boot with linux askmethod option and install everything through FTP/http/nfs/vnc.

I have learned from a painful experience that indeed CD 1 and 2 are required (I only found out when the installer conked out about 85%). How do you do a minimal install? Can you run the post installer manually? Firstboot doesn't do the trick.

For doing a minimal installation, Kickstart would be the best option. FC4 and before had a explicit option in the Anaconda interface. You can unselect all the groups except the base one in FC5 and above to do the same. Due to a bug in FC5 Anaconda, the installer requests the second cd for a minimal installation even though it doesnt use it. Kickstart doesnt have this issue.
