I hope this is the right place to post this question: Should someone ever get banned from the forums, will they retain their right to read their own posts, or should they take regular backups in order not to lose the wealth of info that they (may have) contributed ?

Hmmm...not really sure on that myself. Want to find out? I can ban you and then lift it. Of course, I never tried that either... BTW, were you planning on doing evil in the near future? We don't normally ban without good reason.

Yes, yes, I know that.... Just a question that popped to my mind for... ehr.,. no apparent reason and then began to buzz louder and louder... Anyway, i respectfully decline your proposition, as if you've never banned anyone before, there could be a slight chance you won't remember the exact procedure to lift the ban.... ain't it ? :D

Oh I've banned many, just never "un-banned' them. I don't know if they were ever able to view the Forum afterwards, but I do know that many lost their homes, family, jobs and were told that their feet smelled. Sometimes, if the night is real quiet, I can still hear their plaintive wails......

I believe that they would still be able to view the forum as a guest only...no posting

You really do have a delightful sense of humor.

@smfinley
Bob with a "delightful" sense of humor??
Bet some of his court cases he presided over didn't think he could see much humor in his rulings.
He has "banged" down his gavel here a couple of times too..
But on second thought, I guess he does have a well developed sense of humor and throws in a tidbit of laugh once in a while, as well as some thoughtful timely advise as well.
(yeah--I'm a suckup--he threatened to push the ban button on me and I'm trying to get back into his good graces)--I kind of like skulking/slinking around this forum, and don't wanna be banned/shamed/or loose my home, and just got that "foot oder" under control last week..
I gotta be more careful these days!!!

Most of the time you will not see any of the forum posts if you remain logged with your banned account. Unless the ban was applied as an IP ban, you can see the forum and its posts as a guest and will not be able to participate in the comunity.

Yup, you can still view as a guest. Technically, although it's not allowed, one could create a new user and then post again, but once we know it's the same person then you're really gone, IP ban...

how's an IP ban going to work? I can get a new IP by turning off the modem for 10 minutes and then back on and have a new IP. (usually)
and the ip range is X1.28.0.0 - X1.31.255.255
minus of course the 0.0 and 255.255
and probably several dedicated DNS, and other system IP's used, but still leaving quite a range of IP's that I possibly could have at any one given time.
Right now the software will give a false MAC number for my network card so that's not a real showstopper if any want to monitor the traffic coming and going to this computer...
I am just courious about the IP type ban as I know at least one other FC Forum poster has the same ISP I do and has the same IP range, so the entire IP range shouldn't be banned..it's not a really large range, but still it ain't so small.
I'm just courious and don't want to particularly personally test any banning/spoofing theories I may harbor--hi--hi.

Got to put your minds at ease. Between all of the Community Managers, i doubt that we have 100 bans per year and 90% of those are for spammers. That's not because we rule with an iron hand, it's because the nearly 70,000 members of our Forum treat each other with courtesy and respect - which says a whole lot for the people involved with the Fedora project. True, there have been banned members who have gotten back in by a new identity or other means, but they almost always continue the actions that got them banned in the first place and are soon gone again. If they obey the Guidelines and change their ways, we're happy to have them back in their 'born-again' state. And, as to the IP ban, probably doesn't happen 5 times a year (although ALL of those have been in Arkinsas...).

Well, Bob--you know how us redneck-hillbillies are,
Famous last words around here are--
"Here---hold my beer and watch this "stuff".
Most of us suffer greatly from foot-in-mouth syndrome, also from "foot oder" from runnin around with no shoes in these cow and horse pastures (thus saving those purty cowboy boots for those 'special" occassions--NASCAR events--beer chugging contests--family renuions (get dates there ya know)--chuckwagon races--trail rides---and county fairs.
And the occassional Goat Ropin throwed in fer good measure.
But there is a lot to be said for blindly groping your way through life--ignorance is bliss theory!
I've found a lot of happy folks around here (Ark-n-saw) from time to time..

I hear those County Fairs still feature Racing Pigs (as soon as the beer tent opens). But then again, I'm from NY, where all the ACTION is! Current action consists of trying to nail the porkypine that's eating my neighbor's garage, watching out for the coy dogs while putting corn out for the 'blue jays' and their fawns and hitting the Amvets on Friday nite to see if the Hiway Superintendant is going to finish the road paving this year.
Like you, I couldn't be happier - especially since my wife and I will officially be at 40 years tomorrow. A beautiful lake in front of me, six million acres of 'forever wild' behind me, four good kids, 2 grandkids (and one on the way) my best friend snoozing in the next room (my wife's in there too....) and two great distros on my PC. LIFE IS GOOD!
