For those who must have open source drivers, DRI's radeon drivers hold up fairly well.

At 1280 x 1024 there's only a 5fps difference. Not bad at all.(11fps for the OSS drivers, 1 for fglrx) The difference widens at lower resolutions, up to 20+ FPS difference.
It's too bad he didn't test with a FireGL 8800.
