Thus far I have been holding off on FC5 because of a CIFS issue with reading data from a 2003 domain controller, but that was fixed with a recent kernel update. Therefore, I put a test hard drive in the computer in my signature block and the results are phenominal.

First, if you tried FC5 when it first came out and had some problems, you might want to take another look. I did a standard install with gnome, kde, development tools and samba. When I ran yum update it downloaded 153 updates at nearly 600MB, so there have been some significant changes.

I then followed the Stanton Finley FC5 install notes and without any problems at all, I had xine (for dvd movies), xmms and amarok (for MP3's), Java, Flash, my nvidia drivers, etc all working perfectly.

So, if you are looking for a budget box which will provide fantasitc Linux performance with FC5, i'd highly recommend my setup. It all worked flawlessly out of the box. I personally feel that performance under FC5 is greatly improved in terms of xwindows performance over FC4.

I plan to move to my 120GB hard drive later this week.

What is CFIS and a 2003 Domain controller?

Well, I've been playing with it on a test box since the release, but I'm finally getting comfortable putting it on my main Linux box.

CIFS is common internet file system and it's what is used as a replacment for mount.smbfs.

I have a server at home running Windows 2003 Server. It's currently set up as a domain controller. (That's the MSCE in me coming out) There was a problem until a recent kernel release which prevented me from reading any files on my domain controller. I filed a bugzilla report on the issue when I found it, and several others had the same problem as well. But now that it's corrected, I'm ready to make the move.

So, insert a test drive, load everything up and document my steps. Once I got it down, it's time put plug the 120GB drive back in and get it installed for real. (and that's the systems administrator in general in me....never take a risk if you can avoid it)

Congrats! :D I've been using FC5 since the say before it came out (there was TONS of mirror leaks, and even a torrent was made off the leaks... lol) and there are a bunch of problems initially - but as you mentioned I've been watching then dissapear one by one as updates come out. Gnome 2.14.1 is really the best thing that's happened so far!
