Fedora is my first Linux install that didn't include a Chat Client.
But maybe I missed it - Either way - can anyone recommend
a SAFE app (I have used Xchat and Konversation) ?

install xchat with yum.
and maybe if you want to there's a Gnome interface for it.

If you prefer an istant-messaging program try Gaim, I think it's between the best programs for istant messaging

Both Gaim and kopete come on the discs for FC5. Though when you look for Gaim after install it doesnt say Gaim (lest not on my desktop) it will be under Internet than it just says Internet Messenger.

yum install gaim
Gaim is an excellent IM client supporting many, many protocols and you can even configure it to have small roll-up notifications about signons, etc as MSN did:
yum install gaim-guificationsAfter that just configure the plugin from the preferences.

Yes, but aren't chat and IM two totally different things?

chat, instant messaging, it's all the same to me - Is there a difference? Either way, gaim supports AIM, IRC, MSN, Jabber, AOL, Yahoo, and more so I think it covers both.

I never noticed that GAIM supported IRC chat. I just fired it up and found out while looking through the 'Accounts' dialogue. Perhaps the only drawback is it only has 'freenode' listed where X-Chat has a whole bunch of chat servers to choose from.

Just curious, does GAIM let you do voice chat?

I think it's not possible using the default version, but I've heard of a plugin for Gaim called PhoneGaim that permits Voip.
Does anyone use Gaim for VoIp?
Anyway google tells me Voip functionalities will be included in Gaim 2.0 :D
