whenever I try to install Fedora, in text OR GUI mode, it gives me a problem.
Kernel Panic > Problem Syncing > Attempt To Kill Init
or something like that. Theres a problem with Kubuntu and Ubuntu too, but I asked on their boards. I'm running a HP Pavillion a1030n with integrated sound card. This PC is about 4-5 months old.

I dont know if this is the same problem i had, but there is a known problem with some processors and the installation process of fedora which stops the install from beginning.
when booting up the cd, instead of pressing enter to start the install, first type any word and then enter.
e.g "garbage"
then just press the enter button to start the install and it should start up fine. i have no idea why it happens but i read a post and the info above seemed to help.
Thanks
Kev

Ok, thanks, I'll try that!
EDIT: says
Kernel Image: garbage Not Found.
then i just hit enter and load the normal install and error.
Kernel Panic> Not Syncing or something. Attempt to kill Init.
error code: y0x4f/0x60
any help?

and then i tried this to boot:
linux acpi=off nofb apic=off nofb
and that brought me back where I started... help please!

If you have 1GB of memory
Try pressing F4
linux mem=512M
Enter
It worked for me

I had similar issues... nothing seemed to work... until I found all the installation options and used "linux ide=nodma". That finally solved my problem on an MSI Neo 2 Platinum with an AMD 64 3000, dual channel memory (2X 512) and a Radeon X800 Pro.
I tried Ubuntu, Fedora 5 32-bit and Fedora 5 64-bit... all gave me problems... but with ide=nodma I got the 64 bit version up and running.

So at Ubuntu install, where it says hit enter for normal install, type custom into line blah or something?
I just put in
linux ide=nodma
?

Ummm... I guess I wasn't specific enough. I had problems installing Fedora 5 i386, x64 and Ubuntu. The "linux ide=nodma" only worked for me in Fedora. I don't know what the startup options are in Ubuntu. When I tried typing in "linux ide=nodma" or anything else "linux ..." it did not recognize the command.

Aw, damn! do you have a link to Fedora download?
EDIT: Nvm, I got one... so at start I put in
linux ide=something?

That turns off DMA transfer mode. DMA transfer often messes up CD drives. I guess the other option might be to diable DMA transfer for the CD drive in the BIOS. On my MOBO there's no option to disable DMA.
With WindowsXP you can change the setting in the device manager which is easy... and the installation prog may turn it off during installation (I have no evidence but it would make sense to make installing from a CD more failsafe). But with Linux I'm just as new to it as most others.
