NOTE: Some sections in this tutorial are based on tutorials from Fedoraforum.org and websites...
-------------------------

Welcome to My 1st tutorial ever.. i hope u will benifit somehow from it.. and please reply if u found any mistake :D...

This tutorial is for:

1- NoOoOoOoOoB Users
2- FC5 i386 Users
3- Users without “yum” (cant use yum in FC5 for XYZ problem)
3- Users who had “already” installed FC5
4- Users with nVidia Cards (for section 2 only)

I'm going to explain (how to install):

1- Kernel (IMPORTANT STEP.. YOU HAVE TO DO IT BEFORE DOING ANY INSTALLATIONS BECAUSE ALL THE TUTORIAL IS BASED ON THIS STEP)
2- nVidia driver
3- RealOne
4- XMMS
5- Xine
6- Vmware
5- Cedega 5.1
6- MPlayer

NOTES:

1- I left MPlayer for final step coz it takes a lot of time to install it..
2- try to always log-in with “root” user name so that u can follow up with this tutorial..
3- I will try to provide all url's for the requirements for every step.. otherwise please try to google them..

And here we start ;)
------------------------

Section 0: Basic Issues before doing anything..
1- Terminal:

Requirement: NONE

Before doing anything, we will assign a short cut for our “Terminal”.. “The Terminal is a small window “such as MS-DOS in windows” that allows you to invoke many commands and install application” .. this short cut will make our life easier.. rather than going to

Application >> Accessories >> Terminal

every single time we want to install a thing.. so, go to

System >> Preferences >> keyboard Shortcuts

scroll down the window a little bit, u will find a field called: “Run a terminal” .. Press the “Disable” beside it.. and then hit a key that u will assign the terminal into it.. “I use F3”.. then press “Close”.. now whenever u press ur key “Or F3 in my case”, the terminal window will open..

----------------------

Section 1: Installing Kernel:

Requirements:
1- kernel-2.6.16-1.2080_FC5.i686.rpm
2- kernel-devel-2.6.16-1.2080_FC5.i686.rpm

Downloading Links:
1- ftp://mirror.switch.ch/mirror/fedora/linux/core/updates/5/i386/kernel-2.6.16-1.2080_FC5.i686.rpm
2- ftp://mirror.switch.ch/mirror/fedora/linux/core/updates/5/i386/kernel-devel-2.6.16-1.2080_FC5.i686.rpm

Suggestion:
Print out this section

Basically, the kernel is the core of Fedora.. The build-in kernel does not work probably “atleast with me” .. and i couldn't install any single thing.. and as i mentioned before, all the tutorial is based on this step.. so here we go..

1- download the files that i mentioned in the “Requirements”.. and put them in ur desktop
2- go to ur terminal and type: “init 3”.. (here u will find that the GUI has disappeard! “Graphical User Interface”..) .. type in ur user name and password.. now type the following commands:

[root@localhost ~]# cd /root/Desktop
[root@localhost Desktop]# rpm -ivh kernel-2.6.16-1.2080_FC5.i686.rpm
[root@localhost Desktop]# rpm -ivh kernel-devel-2.6.16-1.2080_FC5.i686.rpm
[root@localhost Desktop]# init 6

when your computer restart.. you will find an option (Fedora Core 2.6.16-1.2080_FC5).. login there always from now on..

END OF KERNEL

check that u have installed the kernel by typing (rpm -ivh kernel-2.6.16-1.2080_FC5.i686.rpm).. if it tells u that (its already installed) then there is something wrong (dont know how to solve this issue).. otherwise if it install the kernel then it wasnt installed probubly in the 1st time..

Hey nice guide, helped me alot setting up FC5, however there are a few errors:

For the nvidia driver after doing everything in your guide I still had to edit xorg.conf in /etc/X11. I had to change manually the line where it says Driver ""vesa"" to Driver ""nvidia"" after that everything worked perfectly.

With xmms I had to install xmms-libs separately throughy yum ( yum install xmms-libs ) and after installing that the other rpms refused to install. To fix it I had to yum all the rpms that you listed except for xmms-mp3 and xmms-shn which arent available from yum, for those I manually installed the rpms that you supplied. After that everything worked perfectly.

With xine I had dependencies with libreadline libssl libcrypto and libslang-utf8 which I resolved simply creating copies of the already present libraries in /usr/lib with the ones that the rpms look for. Then I installed simply using rpm -i uname/* --nodeps. Installing it this way worked perfectly.

Any of these things might not be errors in the guide and simply due to my ignorance as a linux newbie however I wanted to let people know about the problems and solutions I found.

Once again, thanks alot for the guide!

Why are we installing everything separately? USERS can install all needed packages via YUM we have been doing this since fedora core 1. This is how all multimedia is done and also check out the screenshots. (http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=28153)

well, as i mentioned before, i made this tutorial for users who cant use the internet in FC5 "as me".. i have a dial-up modem which cant be recognized in FC5, so, im forced to install everything separately..

@HaRdLiNe.. to say the truth, im still a noob in FC5.. and i wrote this tutorial as i do it in my Fedroa.. so, there have to be some errors here and there..

and btw.. thanks for fixing them and posting the solutions here...

Hi

I tried as HaRdLiNe did with xine and got the same error with the dependencies but I don't understand the step you said on copying the libraries from /usr/lib. Can u elaborate on how to do that. I'm really a newbie and need some help.

Thanks
