I'm trying to get Fedora and SuSE to work with my Brother printer, model MFC-640CW, a multi-function unit. Brother indicates that they do not supprot this model, but to use their driver for MFC-210C. I've DL the .rpm driver, but how to install it so the system recognizes it?

After I DL it, as su - I entered rpm -ivh MFC210Clpr-1.0.2-1.i386.rpm, and it appears that it was installed; however, how do I get the 'PPD' into the listing of printers under the Brother designation? Brother attempts some instructions, but they are so general as to not apply to this situation. I should have stayed with HP as much as I dislike their systems.

Dell 8250, 10254 RPM, 120 GB HDD, KDE on SuSE and Gnome on Fedora

Run the printer utility (system-config-printer) and do Action > Import PPD from the menus.

Bigfoot.... - been there - but the site proceeds to an 'add printer' feature requiing a 'user name' and 'password' for the 'Localhost:631'. None of my user ids or passwords work, so I'm unable to proceed. Unfortunately, Brother sites and phone calls have produced no help with which to install this damn printer. The software site even professed not to know what Linux was..........

So if you ahve a friend contemplating buying a Brother machine BEWARE those who would buy a Brother to use in Linux. As much as I dislike HP, at least the printer I formerly had was recognized in Linux. The printer works great in Windows, but not in Linux - too bad......... The installation asks for a PDD - none exist in the Linux site....

I finally got my Brother MFC-210C program to run in SuSE 10; however, it does not work in FC5. Has anyone had experience along this line with Brother Printers?
