Eric Raymond published an FC5 multimedia HOWTO:

I quote a bit here from his section 9:
<<
... FC5 ships the GNOME project's official video player, totem. Unfortunately, it won't play DVDs. The symptom is an error popup that says "Totem was not able to play this disc. No reason", but the problem is actually a known bug in gstreamer-0.10.

Unfortunately, the alternate front end xine is even more broken. It can be installed this way:
yum install xine xine-lib libdvdcss
...
The 0.99.4 xine release displays an all-white window and does nothing (at least on my plain-vanilla Opteron machine using a nVidia GeForce2).
>>

This does not match my experience exactly, but neither DVD player works on my AMD / GeForce system. I have read the many help documents from Fedora and others, and have installed all the specified codecs from livna including the win32 ones.

Are these apps really broken so badly that I should stop trying and just wait for updates? FC4 worked OK on this same machine.

I can't tell nothing about gstreamer because I don't use it, but xine (apart from a bug in the faad code that affect multichannel audio and the fact that it doesn't handle well some mkv with h264 video) works perfectly fine both in my FC4 and FC5 installation.
Keep in mind that your best choice for multimedia is always MPlayer, no doubt about it (no dvd menus, but I hate them... :D )

mpeg plays fine on Totem-gstreamer using gstreamer-plugins-ugly. Only the DVD play doesn't work.
