my motherboard is a msi k8n platinum plus a radeon pcie x300, after loading the first stage when it's gonna switch to the graphic mode it leaves me just a x-shaped mouse cursor on a black screen.....just that....

have tried 32 bits , 64 bits version, cd and dvd flavors

Fedora 4 installs and run perfectly , could it be a video problem ?, it's just when it switches to graphic mode after being in text mode loading all the initial stuff....

helppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp

I'm having the same problem but on an ECS RC410L/800-M motherboard with a built-in ATI Radeon Xpress 200, but in that configuration it doesn't even give me the mouse cursor. I noticed when FC4 runs Anaconda, it can not identify the Video Chipset, so it uses the VESA (a very old generic interface to the video card) driver. With the VESA driver, the install has NO problems.

With FC5, I have also tried 3 different PCI cards (they where the easiest to install since they were sitting on the shelf). Two of them were based on S3 Virge/GX chipsets. The other was an ATI Rage. With at least a few of those cards, I then saw only the mouse cursor, like you. I also tried my MSI Nvidia 6600GT PCI-express card, pulled from my other system (which installed FC5 just fine with that card). I only saw a mouse cursor with that card, which worked on the other system.

In my case, I think the BIOS may be making the problem worse. The BIOS for the ECS does not give an option to disable the on-board video, just a 'priority' for the 'primary boot device', it either PCI/IGD (integrated graphics device), PCI-Exp/IGD, or just IGD. It's almost like something with the ATI video card is having issues with either the detection process or the mode switch.

I have tried 'text' install, 'noprobe', the other option to not detect the monitor, none of them work.

Is there any way to get Anaconda to NOT try to detect the video chipset, and just use VESA? Based on all the combinations/permutations I have already done, a VESA install option appears to be what I need to install FC5.

I did see that Anaconda-runtime has added support for it. See the change log on rpmfind: from http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/fedora/5/i386/anaconda-runtime-11.0.5-1.i386.html
" - add 'vesa' flag to force the use of the vesa driver"
That was very recent, 3/6/06, so I'm not sure if that version is in FC5.

I have NOT found any option, to give to the FC5 boot: command, that will force the VESA driver. Have I missed something or is it not there?

System:
MB: ECS RC410L/800-M
CPU: Pentium D 805
Memory: 1G OCZ
HD: 2 - 160G Maxtor, 1 - 60G Maxtor
DVD: Sony DVD+-RW.

does it help when you give as install option:
$ linux irqpoll noapic acpi=off

for me this worked (on cheap laptop)

Cheers, Paul.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it didn't work with the built-in ATI Radeon Xpress 200 video. I don't have time to try those options with one of the PCI cards this morning, but will try it tonight.

I am going to try with an old PCI video card, a nice banshee from creative labs, to see if it installs, I tried on my laptop and it runs the graphic installation on both 64 and 32 bits. I'll let the answer over or feel free to add me in MSN, same username I use here at msn dot com

None of the suggestions worked for me. At this moment I am installing SUSE 10 on my problem machine with absolutely no difficulties so far. At this time it is about half way done with installing CD #1.

Is this good-bye Fedora for me?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO WAY , it didn't start with the Banshee PCI, the dark side is tempting me, I am going to install Windows :D

Windows does not even tempt me....however so far so good with SUSE.

trylinux vesa

I had tried that (even though that is not a listed option), and it did still had the same problem.

or
linux noprobe

Yep, I had tried that too and anaconda still said it was probing the video and hung in the same place. Right now, I'm installing the 64-bit FC4. I had installed the 32-bit version while I waited for the 64-bit FC4 DVD to download. So far/so good, it's to the point installing the packages right now. Looks like I may have to stick with FC4 until FC6 comes out. :(

I also have contact ECS and submitted the issue to them. I'm not expecting much, but maybe I'll be surprised.

You might wanna post to Bugzilla, too. Videocard probe hang, you said? And you're with ATi? Yeah... That'll do it. It's why I stick to Nvidia. I currently own a GeForece MMX 400 card, 32MB. Not the best, (well, far from it but OK... lol) but it's been working 100% perfectly, Nvidia drivers or not.

Normally I would too, but the combo deal, I got at Fry's: $149 for the Motherboard & Boxed Pentium D 805 was irresistable...

I'm not sure it's the video, it appears to be an issue with the motherboard... because even when I put my nvidia 6600GT PCI-Express card in the system, it still died around that point. oh well.

Since the VESA driver worked in FC4, I'm hoping the next release will give me the option of just using vesa and not probing for the video card.

I definitely think it's the motherboard, because Radeon (PCIE) and Banshee (PCI) are VERY different cards and it returns the same error.

True... You could always prove it by using those cards on a computer w/ a diff mobo and seeing if it installs

I COULD MAKE IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I JUST UNPLUGGED THE SECONDARY DRIVE OF MY COMPUTER AND IT STARTED !!!!!!!!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO , I GUESS IS SOMETHING RELATED WITH THE RAID ..... BUT ANYWAY, FEDORA CORE 4 INSTALLS , GUESS IS FOR THE KERNEL 2.4 THAT SUPPPORTS SOMETHING ABOUT RAID DISKS THAT 2.6 DOESN'T .....OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT.....

Well, I'll keep you posted if everythings goes fine !
