Hi all,

Noobie here...just diving into Fedora Core and have fresh installed FC5. The (Under system/administration/soundcard detection) finds
Vendor: Intel
Model: Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) AC'97 Audio Controller
Module: snd-intel8x0

However, I cannot get sound to play.

Further, I went into the alsamixer and boosted all levels that I could. I kept reading (in these forums) about different "switches" but was unsure of what was being spoken about. Of possible interest is the "external" option in alsamixer, which simply has a box that reads "00", but no "fader" or adjustment options. Any help would be *greatly* appreciated!!!!

Have you made sure nothing is muted? Can any of the media players get any sound? You might want to try to enable the sound server (Preferences-->Sound) and see if that helps. Unless you have a really new motherboard, I don't see why it shouldn't work.

Nothing muted on the system side or in alsamixer...any other thoughts? Thanks

When you installed FC5, did the sound test work when it detected the card? If that didn't work, you might be able to find some drivers, but that's not a given. You can also try google your mobo model with linux and see if anything comes up. Otherwise you might have to get a new card.

Interesting if you see the same problem as me. /etc/modprobe.conf has 'space symbols' at the end
of lines describing sound. Removing them helps.

"space symbols"? Could you describe? my etc/modprobe.conf reads as follows;

alias eth0 e1000
alias scsi_hostadapter ata_piix
alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
options snd-card-0 index=0
options snd-intel8x0 index=0
remove snd-intel8x0 { /usr/sbin/alsactl store 0 >/dev/null 2>&1 || : ; }; /sbin/modprobe -r --ignore-remove snd-intel8x0

My modprobe.conf has identical lines for sound, but it works. Sorry I can't help you anymore. Have you tried the sound server (esd)?
One more thing. I know it sounds silly, but double check your cable connections for the speakers.
